SUMMARY:Lunch 'N' Learn with Laurie Kennedy-Malone (Nursing) and Jaclyn Mahler (Kinesiology)
DESCRIPTION:Feasibility\, Validity\, and Acceptability of a Physical Activity Ecological Momentary Assessment Study Among Minority Older Adults \n\n\n\nMinority older adults are understudied in health behavior research. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a real-time data capture methodology in which participants’ current behaviors and experiences are repeatedly sampled in real time\, in their natural environments. EMA approaches likely enhance ecological validity\, reduce recall biases\, and allow examination of temporal processes that influence behavior in real-world contexts. Therefore\, EMA can provide novel insights into the prediction and modeling of health behaviors; however\, EMA has not been used to study physical activity or sedentary behavior among minority older adults. This presentation will highlight the feasibility\, validity\, and acceptability of a 7-day EMA protocol with ambulatory monitoring to assess minority older adults’ physical activity and sedentary behavior. Our approach to recruitment strategies that targeted older minority adults utilizing established university-based gerontology connections\, G.R.O.W.T.H. partnerships and cultivating research participants to serve as study ambassadors will be briefly discussed. \n\n\n\nSeating is limited. To RSVP\, click Here!RSVP by February 7th to have lunch provided.

SUMMARY:Lunch 'N' Learn with Frances Bottenberg
DESCRIPTION:On the Uses and Abuses of ‘Dignity’ in Talk About Aging: A Philosophical Conversation \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Frances Bottenberg\, Lecturer in Philosophy\, for a thought-provoking hour in which we examine the concept of human dignity together. What does the concept refer to? And how is it used in conversations about aging? These are not easy questions to answer\, especially because there are several conflicting schools of thought concerning just what the idea of human dignity refers to – or what it should refer to. For example\, some think that “dignity” refers to the intrinsic worth that every human being possesses\, regardless of circumstance. For others\, it is just another word for autonomy or independence. Still others think that dignity pertains to the ability to reason in a self-aware way – which is an ability that may not be accessible to the severely cognitively disabled. And finally\, some think that dignity is about character or even a style of acting – after all\, it’s common to hear phrases such as “dignified aging\,” “living with dignity” and even “dying with dignity” crop up when stakeholders discuss aging as well as end-of-life care. Does this confusion suggest we should just stop using the term altogether? Are there other concepts and words that do a better job describing what really matters when it comes to people helping each other flourish? We’ll reflect on these questions together in this lunch-time session. \n\n\n\nSeating is limited. To RSVP\, click here!RSVP by October 31st to have lunch provided.

SUMMARY:Lunch 'N' Learn with Noah Lenstra
DESCRIPTION:Public Library Services for an Aging Population: Chair Fitness\, Tech Support\, StoryCorps\, and More \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Noah Lenstra\, Assistant Professor of Library & Information Studies\, for this engaging discussion of how public libraries are transforming to better serve an aging population. Public libraries are becoming the go-to space for tech support for the 73% of Americans aged 65 and older that according to the Pew Research Center need help staying up-to-date with emerging tech. They also contribute to health through things like chair- fitness classes\, such as the Rural Hall Branch of the Forsyth County Public Library\, which has offered a Sittercise class at the library every week since 2007. They further build community through inter-generational programslike StoryCorps @ the Library\, a national initiative Greensboro has participated in since 2014. Finally\, in communities that lack senior centers\, the public library IS the senior center\, a reality already in place in rural communities across the U.S. Learn what the nearly 17\,000 public libraries across the U.S. are doing to better serve their aging populations\, and leave with the knowledge you need to bring public libraries into your research and teaching relating to older adults. \n\n\n\nSeating is limited. \n\n\n\nRSVP Here! \n\n\n\nRSVP by October 10th to have lunch provided.
